Fairmont St. Andrews - The Torrance Course
About
Perched atop the cliffs that are situated above St. Andrews Bay, Fairmont St. Andrews offers two stunning traditional links golf courses, the Torrance and the Kittocks. In a region famous for being the home of golf, both courses manage to hold their own against the area's other links courses. Playing the Torrance Course, you would never believe that it was once flat farmland. The designer, Sam Torrance, transformed the course into a challenging links layout that looks as though it has been there forever. The classic Scottish bunkers that are strategically placed throughout provide a formidable test. Be careful from the 14th green to the final hole or you might find yourself tumbling down the rocky cliffs. This dramatic final stretch of holes is especially scenic and challenging with greens that play right along the edge of the water.

The Fairmont Torrance Course
This is an excellent challenging golf course which is always in great condition
Great Course, Perfect greens, good T Boxes
This is a great Course. The front 9 is ok but nothing to write home about, there are a few nice holes. However from the 9th T onwards the fees comes into view, and there are some lovely scenic holes.
Technically this is a tough course, especially with the wind. It was blowing 25-30mph when I played. The fairways are lovely, and the 1st cut of rough is fair. If you go beyond the first cut of rough your ball is gone.
Definitely worth playing if your in the area, and I’m sure it will bring a smile to your face, especially the back 9. There are two courses on this resort and of the two, I think I prefer the Kittocks for the views.
The Torrance
Great day, great weather and most importantly Great course in great condition. Refreshing to play par threes that you don’t need a wood to hit the green.
Torrance
Excellent course good condition great layout and breathtaking views ,can get very windy as it’s a cliff top links ,only fault I could find was the price of a buggy at 45 quid not cheap in my opinion other than that brilliant golf course .
Amazing course considering the amount of rain
Beautiful links course! Very challenging but so much fun!!
Great layout, stunning views.Great condition
£38.00 each. played 2 ball. Used the golf boards which were great fun. definitely play again. Staff very friendly .Managed to complete the round in under 3 hours.
Disappointed
Went to pros shop, to verify my tee off time and pay for trolley.
The Course was very quiet and to my surprise no white or blue tees available to players when I arrived on the first tee.
From the yellow tee, too many holes were much less interesting hence my rating. Also the rough was kept pretty high making almost impossible to find your balls if you were off target.
After my round, went back to pro shop to ask about the absence of white and blue, and was told that was their policy but I could have used the unmarked tees. No apologies and it would have make sense to be informed in advance of that possibility.
CHALLENGING BUT FAIR
Thoroughly enjoyed the course, weather decent, course lovely condition...only downside, a bit of a slog for the wife and my (playing) 9 year old son !!
Good layout and punishing rough
We where looking for something a little different and settled on the the Torrance at the Fairmont for our day out. Initial reaction to to finding there being no tees in play other than the Yellows was disappointing. Once we got over that and settled in it was a good day. Great layout some nice variety of holes. Back 9 being the standout for me. Greens ran a lot better than they looked. Overall good value for money but would have love to have played it from a little further back and more than 6100yards.
Fairmont -Torrance Course
I had the pleasure of playing a 4 ball my friend had won in a competition. Upon arrival we were given a very warm welcome by the guys in the pro shop , even a complimentary bucket of range balls to use for our warm up. The guys I played with both purchased items from the fully stocked pro shop, and although the club house was currently closed , we had the chance to purchase warm bacon rolls. Onto the course! The course is lovely, and is a real challenge. The wind is a major factor, although on the day , the conditions were pretty good. The fairways are tempting with the driver, although I did choose to use a 4 iron of the tee on many holes. There is water hazards on the course and a tempting par 4 which only the brave will take on , being some 260 yards to the Pin, however , you must negotiate the water hazard and thick rough and undergrowth. The only disappointment on the day was the greens. These were full of sand and had no real pace or roll. I think they will improve as the season goes on, however it was a disappointment to say the least. Overall, a beautiful course in a lovely setting, would play again .
Good day out
Friendly staff. Good course, sandy greens but putted true. Tough fairways to hit on some holes. Course is being readied for a European tour event in a few weeks, I'd definitely come back.
Amazing View
Lovely course with amazing view over to St Andrews. Would love to play it again!
A Good course with a mixed bag of experiences
A Summertime game on this occasion, but following after some heavy rain the course was soaked. Although draining well, areas of ground were soft and little watery in some places. Greens up to a high standard and running true with the rains slowing putts and reducing level of borrow required at times helping to a 26 putt round.
This course uses the land undulations inventively at times, whispy long grass looks etherial disguising some nasty ground and risk of lost balls for an erratic driver. And as with most other links courses the dearth of trees leaves more to the weather to generate warmth. That said, the views running along the coast on the finishing holes is to be savoured.
The Medal (White) Tees 6,700 Yds provides a shorter hitting amateur (230 Yds) a tough test playing to a 75 Par realistically, however holes 4-9 and 15-17 play to shorter yardage giving a chance to score even when your game is not on top form. The 9 Longer holes will test the tour level player with stretched yardage, strategic bunkering, clever water elements and testing domed, tiered and fast greens.
Arrive early and make the most of the practice green and range before you start out to give yourself the best shot at this challenging championship level course.
Great day out!
Stunning course, great staff and a superb round of golf! Will be back to play the second course!
In the top ten
A course that is definitely in my top ten courses in Scotland . You are tested in placing your shots with a great deal of thought. A big hitter may get the distances but may also find trouble.
It’s wise to buy a course guide, it will alert you to the difficulties that await you!
A proper Links Course
Very enjoyable despite a two club wind the course was in excellent condition for October
