Well worth a visit

Great little course. Very warm welcome form the pro who went out of his way to ensure we got a tee time which suited us. Course was in good condition. Great greens. One of the best in this area.

Good course for Winter rounds

Most tees are moved forward for Winter play to normal greens (no temporary of Winter greens). Fairways are fairly generous and play to the greens from the edge or very light rough (as requested by the starter) is no problem. Most bunkers marked as GUR.

Greens had been aerated a few weeks prior so were a little bumpy in spots, but still had good pace. I would expect this course to be in great shape by end of April.

Pace of play was my own as hardly anyone else on the course on this cool, moderately windy, cloudy day.

top course

played this course with an american guy and his caddie didn't play my best but still had a challenging and enjoyable round due to the standard of the course and the company. The Last two par 3's are particularly difficult for the higher handicapper but very nice holes. If you are in the area give this course a go you will not be disappointed

Lovely views

My only complaint would be that some of the shots are completely blind! Hit some good shots and never found the ball. Hit what I thought was a bad short and took three of the tee to find my first ball near the pin!

Good course for play in March in Scotland

The course layout in Winter is altered on four holes of which two use the original Tom Morris design making them shorter, but no less challenging. Despite playing at the end of Winter season, the fairways were dry. The greens are amongst the best in the area, running true and only a bit slower than would be expected.

Go off the grid to play Tain

American golfers who seek out Tain are pure links lovers who know more than you do. This Old Tom Morris course rarely gets overseas visitors, and that's a shame. It's got one of the great holes of Scotland - the blind par-4 11th called the 'Alps" - and a couple of other keepers. It's just 15 minutes from Dornoch and two miles from the Glenmorangie Whiskey distillery. It's got some loveable

Great Highlands Value

Played twice in one day. Excellent value-$110 for two rounds. They also have twilight for under $50.
The terrain varies and even has some inland holes which would be considered parkland, but play like links.
Favorite hole was the 11th hole; it is an alps and you ring a bell when you are done-leads you to the sea. The 17th hole is a long par 3 and is great. Good variety of dog legs, short and long par 3s and 4s.
Tain does not get the visitors that Dornoch gets, so it was wide open on the day I played. Both rounds were around 3 hours each.
Staff was incredibly accommodating and made the experience quite wonderful.
Wouldn't suggest making a special trip to play the course; however, if you are up in the highlands to play Dornoch, it is worth the visit; especially as a warm up. The rates/value are phenomenal.
