Stranraer Golf Club
About
Stranraer Golf Club, located in southwest Scotland on the shores of Loch Ryan, is set on gently undulating ground. The parkland course affords exceptional views over the loch to Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran and beyond.
Holes to look out for include three par-4s: the third, fifth and 11th holes. On the 403-yard third, a winding burn is crossed three times to reach a green set between a large bunker on the left and a steep bank sloping toward the burn on the right. The 382-yard fifth starts from an elevated tee down to a tight, sloping fairway set between a densely gorsed embankment and two inviting fairway bunkers. No. 11, at 382 yards, requires a demanding tee shot, with trees and out of bounds on the left, then a steep rise to a very fast green.
Stranraer Golf Club was designed in 1950 by the distinguished golf course architect James Braid. It was the last course he designed before he died in 1950.

Great Welcome and hospitality
The course was in good condition and the welcome by all the staff was excellent and extremely professional at all times. The food and drink offering was great quality and good value for money
What a surprise
We had a 4 ball returning from Turnberry. I was recommended Stranraer as hidden gem and it didn’t disappoint. Not too long but technical enough to give a wide range of handicaps a test. Fantastic views and a friendly reception made it a great day. Highly recommended.
Day out At Braids Last
We had a most enjoyable day out on this “ Braw Course” one of Braids last. The breakfast and rolls were terrific. The course was very well presented for a pre season round. Would love to return to play when the season has started. Great Golf Experience.
The course was being well prepared for the season coming. Put this course on your to play list. Davidjr
Fantastic course
First time playing the course and we really enjoyed it! Was quite a windy day but still a great course to play. Some fantastic views out to the sea and beyond. Course itself was in very good condition and the greens were superb. Friendly staff in the office and lounge, food was good too. Definitely play it again.
Amazing place to play golf
The course is in tremendous condition and provided a great test as always. The hospitality and friendliness of the staff and patrons is second to none. For the last few years our annual trip to Scotland and our obligatory round at Stranraer is the highlight of my golfing calendar and it is the only course we play religiously each year. This is by far my most favourite place to play golf. Oh, and the full Scottish breakfast is highly recommended too!
Wet and windy but failed to dim pleasure in the course
The weather could have been kinder to me - but the quality and interest in the course shone through.
Excellent value for a lovely experience-
Wet & windy Stranraer
First time here having played many James Braid courses. In spite of poor weather we really enjoyed the layout. Very challenging! Greens were fantastic and unaffected by the rain. 5th & 14th are holes to remember and my par 4 at the 17th was highlight of the day. Very helpful welcome by Starter and lovely lady in clubhouse. Hope to return some day in better weather.
Great course
Great course with a few stand out holes. Nice clubhouse with friendly staff and good food. Highly recommended.
Very enjoyable
It turned into a beautiful day which meant we could enjoy the lovely views all the more. Another course with quite a few blind shots, particularly on the front 9, lots of slope s on the fairways and greens in very good condition with plenty of slopes to contend with. The 5th is a stunning hole, and the 7th is a cracking par 3. Those 2 holes particularly stood out for me. We got stuck behind a fairly slow moving 4 ball on the back 9, but still finished in under 3.5 hours. A very enjoyable round, even with a pathetic 24 points.
Great golf challenge and welcoming clubhouse
Good driving holes tricky par 3s and approach shots to test every standard of golfer. Still a bit bare in odd places after prolonged sunny spell but greens lush and running fast. We walked with carts and took 3.5 hours, buggy players scooted round a good bit faster. Stranraer is a well laid out James Braid course with beautiful panoramic views, we play 2 or 3 times a year and it is an easily affordable treat for a great day in the late summer sunshine.
The clubhouse is a friendly and very welcoming environment with pleasant staff and views of a few holes from the upstairs lounge/dining area.
Dry fast and tough
No rain in recent weeks so the course is brown, hard and fast. Some great holes - the 5th in particular is stunning. Views are amazing. Well worth a visit.
Lovely and friendly golf club
I really enjoyed my round of golf the course is challenging to say the least, the course was in excellent condition with the greens being very fast and slick, I would recommend this course to anyone who enjoys golf with a challenge
