Edinburgh's Craigmillar Park Golf Club, which sits near Blackford Hill's Royal Observatory, offers a parkland panorama of the city, East Lothian and the Perthshire Hills. The club formed in 1895 and has remained at its current location since 1907, and the designer James Braid extended the golf course to 18 holes in 1927.

The Craigmillar Park Golf Club's course measures 5,825 yards and hosts the 72-hole Craigmillar Park Open each April. Nick Faldo won in '76, turning professional soon after. Marc Warren won in 2000 and '02 and is now a top golfer. Lloyd Saltman, who won in 2007 and has since turned professional, plays the Asian Tour.

Craigmillar Park Golf Club offers several fantastic holes, perhaps the best of which is the par-3 15th, The Dams, on which your tee shot needs to clear a burn guarding a green that slopes nastily.

A hilly Jem

The hills make this course a challenge, the views make it spectacular! Each hole presents its own unique challenge.
Allen, the club pro was welcoming and helpful.
The locals helped us along the way to know the quirks and help avoid the potential problems.
We’d gladly play there again!

Great City Golf option

My wife and I played with a 12.10 tee time that followed a monthly medal, which we assumed would hold up the pace of play. The members went out in three-balls and didn't slow us down at all.

The club house was friendly and welcoming and Alan Wright, the Pro was friendly and helpful.

We really enjoyed the layout. Because of the hills there are a number of blind shots and some were longer than we imagined but as long as you're not too wayward it was fine. There were a number of uphill holes, but it seemed as though we played from elevated tees more often than facing an uphill drive, which is clearly down to the clever course design (originally by James Braid I understand).

The greens were in really good nick and fairways offered plenty of roll and were generally well tended. As we followed some members we navigated OK but there didn't appear to be a lot of signage (although there is a good layout map on the score card). Bunkers had plenty of sand and overall the course was in good condition and is well looked after. It's tight in a few places, with signs asking you to wait until you the group in front have cleared the next tee-box and the 10th fairway crossing over the first, but that just added to its charm.

It's not a long course, and the hills make up for the lack of yardage but it is certainly a great city course with some fantastic views of the surrounding streets and hills, including Arthur's Seat. It is also surprisingly quiet and pretty tranquil with only the faintest amounts of traffic noise, which was a very pleasant surprise.

We thoroughly enjoyed our round and would recommend the course to anyone. There's something for everyone, some scoring opportunities as well as a few challenges (which for me on the day was the par three's for some reason).

We'll be back next time we're up and will look forward to playing Craigmillar again.

Friendly and helpful pro

Well kept course. Brilliant greens, 18 of them rolled perfect. We where just on time and the pro could not be more helpful, absolutely excellent service. Would definitely recommend a wee round here, quite hilly though so a push cart would be handy if you struggle walking hilly courses. Thoroughly enjoyed my round and managed to shoot 75 on my first visit.

Mixed Bag

Played in January so the course was not going to be playing at its best.
The course is pretty hilly and there are too many blind shots for my liking. The course doesn't play that long and if you drive the ball well there won't be that many long irons into the green, 'good' you might say- but it gets a bit repetitive playing driver- wedge. Not a very penal course- for loose drives there is usually an escape. Could have done with a bit more attention to the winter greens. Good clubhouse with views over the 18th and 1st tee. Overall wouldn't go rushing back and think there are better parkland options in Edinburgh around this price point.

Beautiful Course with some amazing views over Edinburgh

Course looks like it has been kept in some kind of protective bubble from the harsh, wet winter we've had. Don't think I've ever played a course in such good condition at any time of year. Hats off to the Greenkeepers and staff - hardly a blade of grass out of place!
