The Moffat Golf Club
About
Located high on Coats Hill overlooking the town, Moffat Golf Club is some 670 feet above sea level and commands splendid views in all directions. Course designer Ben Sayers successfully incorporated all the natural undulations and hazards into his 1904 layout, combining deceptive approach shots with subtle greens.
Referred to as the Jewel in the South, the 18-hole golf course is one of the most attractive, varied and interesting inland courses in the country. On many of the holes, there is nothing to be seen except the natural beauty of sky and hills.
The 390-yard eighth hole is considered the most difficult on the golf course with a fairway in two sections. A deceptively sloping green adds to the challenge.
That's followed by the course's signature hole. The 125-yard ninth hole is featured in Britain's 100 Extraordinary Golf Holes. An intimidating par-3, the ground rises - gently at first - before developing into a towering rock face. The saucer-shaped green is only a few yards over the top.
