Visiting St. Andrews but don't have the clout to play the Old Course? Don't fret, there are other golf courses at the Home of Golf. One of the latest, opened in July 1, 1993, is the Strathtyrum Course.
When it was built, it was the first new 18-hole golf course in 80 years. The course takes its name from the adjacent Strathtyrum Estate, from which the land was purchased.
Designed by Donald Steel, the Strathtyrum Course complements the tougher championship layouts at St. Andrews. It's short and, with only 15 bunkers, it's a much less sand friendly environment than one usually associates with St. Andrews. It still requires skill, though, to make it through successfully.
Although there are few, the bunkers are strategically places to bring you the most aggravation. And the mounds around the green place emphasis on iron play and accuracy. The greens themselves have slopes and borrows that will play havoc with your short game.
The Strathtyrum Course is 5,620 yards and a par of 69. There are two par 5s and five par 3s, including No. 6, a miniscule 125-yarder that's harder than the length would indicate. The only hole over 500 yards is No. 11, a 512-yard par 5.
Location: A91 from Cupar. Once in town take third turning on left into Golf Place and follow for 500 yards.
