Royal Musselburgh Golf Club
About
Royal Musselburgh Golf Club sits at the tip of the renowned span of golf fcourses along the East Lothian coast, and offers picture-perfect parkland play, making it a must-visit. Royal Musselburgh holds the honor of being the world's fifth-oldest, having started as the nine-hole links course, Musselburgh Levenhall. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Royal Burgess Golfing Society and Bruntsfield Golf Club have all golfed there.
Royal Musselbergh Golf Club's 349-yard par-4 first hole hides two fairway bunkers to the right. The 477-yard par-5 ninth requires three-shot play when fighting wind: The closer you get to the green after two strokes, the more difficult the pitch. Close down on the 410-yard par-4 18th, where it behooves golfers to carry a big stick, as going right off the tee, rather than carrying the drive to just in front of the green, is a major folly. Non members may pay to use the restaurant and bar, become social members, and get affordable course fare, as well as the chance to attend special events such as dances, buffets, and whisky tastings.

Great condition
The staff were very welcoming, course was in fantastic condition and we thoroughly enjoyed our day. The only slight negative for us was there were constant FORE shouts as a number of the holes run parallel and are very close to each other.
Etiquette
Myself and my friend enjoyed the course and were very welcome from arrival at the pro shop. The pro was brilliant. We are very let down by the fact we were told there was nobody around us so we were in the tee at the correct time 1540hrs and there were two members. Trying to tee off. There was a bagpiper playing at the side of the tee for a wedding. I am a bagpiper and I certainly wouldn’t do this but again the course staff can help out by moving him on!
I am very disappointed at the etiquette of members we were a two ball and played at a good pace. The two members behind rushed us. Every time we weren’t on the green and they had teed off. We were on the par 3 7th and got a hole ahead, but by the par 5 9th we had just played our second shot and they had teed off. This is appalling. Members need to respect the rules and especially not be 2 minutes behind us. They should have been told to wait. This wasn’t a great experience for us as the members continued up our backs. And then jumped over to 13 while we played the 10th. After this we were fine and were able to relax and enjoy what was left of our first outing.
Will we be back? I don’t know as I don’t like being rushed to play golf. The pro shop staff was excellent very accommodating and helpful! Thanks again.
Short and sweet
Relatively short course (with only 1 par 5) so you won't get much use out of your fairway woods. Excellently well maintained course with a grand old clubhouse at the heart. I got a brilliant £20 deal, superb value for money at that price.
Course was in excellent condition, weather was great, nice beer in the clubhouse after. All in all a very pleasant afternoon golfing.
Beautiful parkland course
Beautiful course, friendly staff at pro shop and all organised for checkin. Majestic old building as clubhouse.
Great test of accurate golf.
Early in the season and a cold day. Even though the greens had been treated they still ran true. Couple of patchy bits around greens due to time of year but a great tough test of accurate hitting. Will be back in the summer and definitely would recommend to a friend.
Interesting course with some challenging holes.
Will come back to play again. Some interesting holes, course was in good condition. Friendly staff in pro shop and clubhouse.
Unfriendliness of some.
Cannot fault the pro/starter who was very friendly and enthusiastic. Unfortunately that is where the welcome finished. The members we met on the course did not acknowledge us which we found very disconcerting as this was the first time we had encountered this unfriendliness in all our years of travelling through Scotland and abroad.
The greens were cored and top dressed which made chipping a putting difficult - this was not pointed out before we started our round. Some of the tees/greens were very close to one another which we felt was quite dangerous as there were no signs for visitors.
All in all a disappointing golf day for us but hopefully this review will help to bring to the members attention that a polite nod or smile can encourage visitors to return to their golf club.
Awful!
Conditions were okay. Course is nice. But pace of play completely ruined my round and made me hate it, a group of local members was super rude to me as well.
Just Awesome
Course was in great condition and the staff were very friendly.
Magnificent
Loved every minute of the experience at Royal Musselburgh.
I was greeted warmly by the staff, and welcomed on to the 1st tee by playing members. They showed me round the course, which was very well presented. Note for anyone playing, the ball on the green falls towards the sea..
I look forward to going back to play again!! (I'm from Manchester)
