Portlethen Golf Club
About
The course is maturing into one of the more popular parkland courses in the North East of Scotland having been blessed with natural features the principal one being the Findon burn which, lined with mature broadleaf trees, crosses 5 of the holes on the first nine influencing either tee or approach shots.
The par 5 485 yard fourth hole poses a problem of choice of second shots as the burn crosses 90 yards short of the green, the wayward shot punished by ending up in the burn or in the trees. The inward 9 holes carry fewer hazards but the Findon burn continues to create problems at the fifteenth and eighteenth.
Arguably the fifteenth is the 'signature hole' of the course. First, the tee shot has to be accurate to cope with the right to left dog leg and then the approach shot, from a down hill lie, has to carry the Findon burn which, moat like, guards the entrance to the green. The par 507 yd par 5 eighteenth is a challenging closing hole featuring a drystone dyke on the left running all the way from tee to green with the risk of out of bounds with even' shot. The Findon burn. 1(K) yards short of the green creates a further dilemma of second shot selection; to carry or not to carry.
Senior golfers and visitors normally play the shorter par 70 'Blue Tee' course.
Course development has seen the planting of around 21.000 carefully selected trees, restoration of drystone dykes. construction of stone bridges, new tees at several holes and a pond at the short fifth. There is an extensive practice area, part of which is the site of approved plans to build a 15 bay driving range. The substantial putting green is conveniently sited near the first tee. Both golf trolleys and buggies are available for hire.

Pricey but overall worth it
First time playing at portlethen, must say it has been my favourite course so far, conditions where absolutely perfect and the course was immaculate !… can’t remember what hole it is but that little Par 3 over the pond is a cracking hole (even if the first topped 8 iron went splash) … I went round walking solo but think I’d of benefitted from a cart as it was a bit of a hike back down 16/17/18 for me. Just a personal note this was the first course I’ve played and shot under 90 so thank you to portlethen for that !
Texas scramble 2021
Not alot negative to say about this trip tp Portlethen. Wont be many places in Aberdeen in better condition than Portlethen. The greens for the winter we had are 10/10. My only gripe is it took us over 4 hours to play a 4 ball texas scramble off the blacks. Also walking all the way back to the 17th tee off is annoying. But overall great course and superb condition. Green keepers i take my hat off.
Excellent condition
Really enjoyed the course which was in superb condition.
Would recommend to anyone who hasn't yet played it.
Rude and obnoxious staff
I want a refund as I didn’t even get on the course. After travelling over 30 miles to go play I get told I wasn’t dressed for the occasion...no polo shirt so no round. What a joke
Nice course not too challenging
This is a course worth playing if your visiting Aberdeen. We found that some areas have matured and need to be pruned back to it's original shape. For example the water holes where the tree has grown in maturity. The condition and pace of movement was good.
Great day out
Had the chance to play this charming course. Particularly liked the two water holes. The greens are very well maintained. Only thing I didn't like was trying to cross the road at the end of the round with rush hour traffic. Well worth the money.
Nice open course with challenging holes
This course was well set out and very well maintained. The course was well set out and had good direction from hole to hole. The pace of play was good. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The course was challenging but not ridiculously hard. The holes were open enough that your ball was rarely unplayable. A testing course that I would recommend to anyone.
Unexpected
After travelling to Scotland from Canada. I was invited to play Friday at 2pm and found out the group cancelled due to bad weather conditions. I waited till 11 and realized the weather started looking food and proceeded to look up though my account acailablitlity. I got out at 1:48 and had the sun shine on me almost all of the round. Needless to say Stuart the head pro allowed me to tee off an hour early as there were a few cancellations.
Thanks GolfNow.
Portlethen Golf Course
With the dry period we had this year. Portlethen Golf Course was in great condition. No complaints at all.
K Morrison
Recently had a round with 2 work colleagues. The course was busy yet there was no delay on any hole during the entire round. The course was in stunning condition considering the monsoon conditions the day before. We only encountered a small patch of standing water on the 18th fairway. The greens and overall condition of the course was fantastic, the greenkeepers and staff have done a fantastic job maintinaing the course.
Clubhouse was friendly, and the catering before and after the round was excellent.
We had a great day and will certainly return to the course very soon for another round.
Enjoyable experience
Course in excellent condition. Staff friendly, helpful and welcoming. Only downside was the high level of traffic noise and adjacent building works but did not detract from our enjoyment.
Good condition but frustrating layout
Although the greens are in great shape and the course has matured the layout of this course really lets it down, particularly on the back 9. The front 9 has a couple of interesting holes, 3rd in particular is a nice challenge, but you get funnelled into tight spaces where it feels claustrophobic. Even worse on the back 9. Almost seems as though a couple of holes are shoe-horned in where they shouldn't be. I played off the yellows (as a visitor) and the position of some tee boxes is just weird. This unnecessarily shortens some holes and restricts the course to a par 70.
Pace of play was also pretty slow - best part of 4 hours, not helped by the layout I think
