Montrose Golf Links - 1562 Course
About
The 1562 Course at Montrose Links (previously known as Medal Course) is a majestic layout in the true traditions of Scottish links golf and has played host to many important events in its history, including the Scottish Professional Championship in 1967 and 1970, the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1975 and the British Boys Championship and Internationals in 1991. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club honored the Links in being chosen as a final qualifying golf course for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007.
Located on the links between the town of Montrose and the coast, the Montrose 1562 Golf Course is recognized as the fifth oldest golf course in the world. Golf has been played on the 1562 Course since at least 1562.
Described as "a magnificent stretch of marvelously natural ground" the course challenges golfers with its undulating fairways and fast greens, made more difficult when the wind whips inland from the sea. The par-71 golf course measures 6,585 yards.

Excellent Value
Course was playing a little shorter from winter tees but still a good challenge. The greens were in nice condition for the time of year. From past experience it can be slow but as the course was quiet there were no issues this time. Excellent value if you can take advantage of a discounted tee time. Only downside was the alarming amount of dog waste at various spots around the course. Their owners should be ashamed.
Great winter setup
A great course to play during winter months.
Shorter in length due to tees being moved forward on some holes but playing to the full greens.
On going course improvements and maintainence doesn't impact play.
True links experience
It was all great: course, people and even my game.
Beautiful piece of real links.
Interesting course
Fun challenging course with excellent greens, good pace of play and friendly members. Would recommend for all levels of players.
5th Oldest Golf Course in the World - 1562!
This course is what links golf is all about! My family is from around the bay and our family name is mentioned in both the Royal Montrose club and the Mercantile Club house. So playing this course has a personal attachment/meaning then just playing a great old track. Our 2nd time playing here and again it didn't disappoint! Great views of the north sea from the holes that run along the coast, with tight and well bunkered fairways. Greens are quick but not super undulated. Well placed tee boxes give you a good perspective of the hole and landing areas. Its just a short drive from the town of St Andrews and is worth the trip to play one of the oldest courses in the world!
Both the Royal Montrose and Mercantile clubs allow all golfers to come in the clubs enjoy food and bevys after the round. Staff and members are all very friendly and enjoy hearing about your experience on their golf course!!

worth playing!
Great course, friendly staff. Well worth trying. Great seaside views.
Excellent course spoiled by waiting for every shot.
Had a great game of golf on an excellent links course but unfortunately spoiled by waiting on every shot from first to last hole. Maybe this was because of the popularity of the course but the Americans in front and the Germans behind us must have been a bit hacked off(unless this is what they are used to) by all the waiting. One hole had a group on the green(par 3) and 2 groups waiting when we finished the hole behind.
