Lundin Golf Club, just 30 minutes from St. Andrews, is one of Scotland's lesser known gems. The golf course is renowned for its beautiful greens and demanding, short par 4s.
The club was founded in 1868 and was redesigned in 1908-09. It remains largely the same was it was laid out 100 years ago. The course is known for its narrow fairways, bunkers, burns and ever-changing winds.
Par for the 6,371-yard course is 71. There are only two par 5s on Lundin and only one hole over 500 yards. The challenges start on No. 1, a 420-yard par 4. You'll tee off from an elevated green to a generous fairway. Boundary is left on the second shot, and the green slopes downhill from front to back.
No. 5 is the first par 3, a 141-yard hole, the shortest of the golf course. It's by no means a gimme, though, with a burn to negotiate and bunkers surrounding the green. The front nine ends with a hole correctly named "Long," a 555-yard par 5. Beware of the boundary on the right side after 300 yards and the sand traps to the left and right of the green.
No. 16 is one of those aforementioned short par 4s, a 311-yard hole that is more difficult than its yardage would suggest. A burn runs across the fairway. You'd be best served to play it down the right side.
Lundin Golf Club has a clubhouse with a bar, a lounge and a dining room, as well as changing facilities and showers. There's also a pro shop. Lundin Links also has an excellent nine-hole Lundin Ladies golf course. However, it welcomes visitors of both sexes.
Location: A915 Kirkcaldy to St Andrews road. From Kirkcaldy, through Leven into Lundin Links. Turn right in dip, left, right and left.
