Cupar Golf Club: The clubhouse

Cupar Golf Club is a nine-hole course, located on the south side of Cupar, 10 miles west of St. Andrews. And if you're waiting for the club to add the back nine, you might be waiting a long while.

Founded in 1855, Cupar Golf Club is believed to the the oldest nine-hole club in the world. The original golf course was on private property at Tailabout Farm, where the tenant had given members permission to "exercise" twice a week. The club played at Tailabout for 21 years, before moving to several locations until landing at its current spot in 1892.

History is important at Cupar Golf Club. A clubhouse was opened in 1907, and though modernized and extended, the facade of the clubhouse remains the same.

The course itself is a rolling, hilly parkland course that sits atop the Hill of Tarvit, offering views of the village below. Cupar is a civil layout, with a par 3 offered on the first and a short par 4 on the ninth, allowing you to ease in and ease out.

The small greens cut into the hillside are in great condition. The Cupar course is 5,153 yards from the medal tees, and the longest hole is just 417 yards. The ninth is short, within driving range to the green situated in front of the clubhouse. The par 4 offers a great birdie opportunity that has provided members much drama and amusement through the years.

Cupar Golf Club offers good, basic amenities to non-members. The lounge overlooking the last green provides meals, bar snacks and beverages to all.

Location: Follow Kirkcaldy to Glenrothes road out of Cupar. Left onto Ceres Road. Car park on right after quarter of a mile on Ceres Road. Nine miles from St Andrews.
