Kingsbarns Golf Links: The modern marvel on the outskirts of St. Andrews
KINGSBARNS, Scotland -- If you can't secure your tee time on the Old Course, don't fret. There's a magical, marvelous, magnificent bucket-list links six miles away ready to blow your mind: Kingsbarns Golf Links.
It may be blasphemy to some, but there are golfers who would play Kingsbarns over the Old Course every day of the week. The modern links by Kyle Phillips is that spectacular.
It opened in 2000 on the windswept cliffs where golf has been played since 1793. Wide fairways and big, perplexing greens ensure it remains enjoyable in big winds off the North Sea. The stirring views of the water never subside. They come crashing again and again, more intensely as the round moves forward, leading to great visual reveals, such as the dramatic, dogleg, par-5 12th hole or the peninsula green jutting into the sea at the par-3 15th hole.
It's a round no golfer forgets. The green fee is one of the highest in Scotland, but that's not a surprise, considering this is a priceless experience in the Home of Golf.
