Trump International Golf Links Scotland
About
Trump International Golf Links Scotland sits on a rugged stretch of the Aberdeenshire coastline. Covered in sandy dunes, the landscape is the ideal terrain for links golf. The layout of the golf course follows the natural contours of the land, dipping into the scenic valleys and tumbling across gentle hills. The course stretches to just over 7,400 yards, routed in a classic pattern of two out-and-back loops of nine holes. The golf course has a varied layout that offers both spaciousness and seclusion. Golfers will enjoy plenty of variety from hole to hole as well as panoramic views of the sea. Like any traditional links course, the strategically placed bunkers and prevailing coastal winds present the most formidable challenges. Five sets of tees make the course approachable for all skill levels, however.

Worth the hype
I had big expectations when I arrived at Trump's new course in Scotland -- and frankly, my experience exceeded them. The course is visually spectacular, with many holes shaped by massive dunes. I found the fairways plenty generous, but trouble lurks on almost every hole. On a windy day, it could be a bear to play. I will say, this course isn't well-suited for high-handicappers; you really have to golf your ball to enjoy the experience. My fellow playing competitors didn't play particularly well that day and were searching for balls on almost every hole. Because the turf is still new, it was harder than usual to perfectly compress the ball at impact. That'll get much easier as the course gets older. Overall, an absolute treat, and a must-play for anyone in the area.
A new Scottish option
The place is beautiful, and some will understandably give it five stars instead of four stars, but it was ridiculously difficult. Too difficult for me.
Our group had two good players and two mediocre players and, on this windy day, we looked for at least one ball on every single hole. It got tiresome after awhile.
But it's big and massive, just what you think a Trump course would be. The par 3s are fantastic and there are many memorable holes, but I feel like it was designed to be hard just for the sake of it. It'll be a blast for single-digit handicappers, but not so much for anyone in double digits.
A challenging links lies in those dunes
Trump's links has some otherworldly characteristics to love - mountainous dunes, spectacular par 3s and a short par 4 that everybody can drive (I did with a five-wood) - but I can't give it that coveted fifth star just yet. Our back nine was soaked wet with rain, so we couldn't enjoy some of the most dramatic views from the elevated 14th and 18th tees. And, unfortunately, it feels fabricated at times. There are too many bunkers and severe greens (like the drive-able seventh hole) for it to feel like a classic links that has been around for generations. Despite those flaws, would I fly around the world to play it again? Absolutely. So should you.
A must play course in North East Scotland
