The 1562 Course at Montrose Links (previously known as Medal Course) is a majestic layout in the true traditions of Scottish links golf and has played host to many important events in its history, including the Scottish Professional Championship in 1967 and 1970, the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1975 and the British Boys Championship and Internationals in 1991. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club honored the Links in being chosen as a final qualifying golf course for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007.

Located on the links between the town of Montrose and the coast, the Montrose 1562 Golf Course is recognized as the fifth oldest golf course in the world. Golf has been played on the 1562 Course since at least 1562.

Described as "a magnificent stretch of marvelously natural ground" the course challenges golfers with its undulating fairways and fast greens, made more difficult when the wind whips inland from the sea. The par-71 golf course measures 6,585 yards.

Excellent links course

Course was in excellent condition. Greens were very good, true but not too fast.
Pace of play was also good. The round only took 3 hours 20 minutes. Much better than the 5 hours around Gleneagles 2 days before!

Great course looking frayed

I have played this great course many times and I fully realise that they have had a lot of trouble from the elements. And it is early March. But I was still disappointed by its forlorn state. Ongoing winter work makes many places look sad and I am a member at Dunbar and have played Gullane 1 a couple of times recently and they are magnificent just now.

I just hate what so many places do in the winter i.e. push tees away forward, put pins in silly places. Surely it is not beyond the wit of the greenkeeping fraternity to put a wee bit thought into the winter layout for players, both members and visitors.

My pal carried his clubs while I had a power caddy and I think I must have walked two miles more than him - round all the fences erected to protect the places that get a lot of traffic.

Not the Montrose I know and love then. I hope it will soon be back to its best. It is a great layout for anybody who has not played it before; just NOT at the moment.

Pace of play was great and we were only a a few minutes over three hours for the round.

Highlight of a trip to Carnoustie Country

With The Open ongoing at Carnoustie, it afforded us a chance to check out the local links, and Montrose, although the farthest drive from Carnoustie, was the highlight. The opening four holes are as good as it gets in the area in terms of starting out. The course's unusual landscape features the highest holes by the sea, and then the remainder of the course is well below and plays closer to the town. I tried to explain it to my playing partner as a kind of "reverse Dornoch" but that phrase might need fine-tuning. The flatter holes certainly have character as well, like the par-5 15th and the long but interesting par-3 16th. the town skyline serves as a nice backdrop as well. Don't think there is a better 50-quid course in this part of Scotland. About an hour south of Aberdeen and 40-minutes northeast of Carnoustie, do try and fashion some time to visit if you're in the area of either.

Disappointing communication

First things first- I love this course and will play it as often as I can. It is a true links course with a traditional feel, friendly members, and beautiful scenery. It will test your game.

My gripe with this round was that I booked on a hot deal and was prepared to play off winter tees. However there was no mention of the requirement to play off mats when on the fairway or semi rough, or the fact that winter greens were in play. The reason I paid to play was that I would get to play on summer greens, as is generally the case year round here.

The pro informed us when we signed of these conditions when we signed in at the pro shop. Had we known these measures were in place we wouldn't have played, but come back later in the year.

Although a winter course the course was in excellent condition.
Off summer tees it would be a real test.

Fantastic old style links

Played the course in the middle of the practice day for the europro tour event. Really slow..... don't know how these guys can keep their patience!
The course itself is fantastic, not desperately long but in great condition & a great example of old style links.

Course in excellent condition. Greens very nice. Couple of across the beach shots from the mens tees. Fairways often bumpy but generally wide. No cross traffic. Recommended

Classic Links

A truly fantastic course. Despite it being only the middle of May, the ground was firm and beginning to burn out a little giving that classic links look. Was a windy day, which we benefitted from on the way out but playing into the wind on the way back to town was significantly tougher but that's all part of the charm of links golf!

Course is highly recommended and any visitor to Scotland should try and fit it into their itinerary.....they won't be disappointed.

Top quality links

Played on a last minute deal, and given the time of year - mid March- the course was in excellent condition. Greens were running well and very receptive. Course is a good challenge especially when the wind is up. A cracking course.
